The universal serial bus flash drives are small in size and light in weight. They are not permanently attached to the computer system and can be attached and removed easily through the universal serial bus component of the computer.
All data on the flash drives can be easily deleted or re-written upon with ease.
Advantages of USB Flash Drives
As already stated, the USB Flash Drives are small and lightweight. They are detachable and rewritable. Besides these features there are others also which make them very useful for the user. To begin with, the flash drives are very compact.
Speed of Operation
They have much faster speeds of operation than compared to other similar storage media, for example as compared to the floppy disks and the DVDs. For their size the Flash Drives can hold an enormously large amount of data. Other media might be able to hold more data as compared to the USB Flash Drives, but then they are also more bulky and slower in operations.
Reliability
THE Universal Serial Bus Flash Drives are also more reliable when compared with other storage media. This is because these drives do not have any mechanical parts. As a result of this fact they are not prone to wear and tear as the other storage media is.
Design
Not only are the Flash Drives more compact, lightweight, faster and reliable, but they also have a more long lasting design configuration. This is because they are so small that they can be easily pocketed or hung from the neck.
Advantages of DVDs
The DVDs are also referred to as the Digital Versatile Disks or the Digital Video Disks. They are perhaps the most popular media storage devices after the hard disk drives. They are used chiefly for the storage of movies and software. At times the DVDs are also utilised for the archival of requisite data. Though the dimensions of a DVD are similar to those of a CD, they can, nevertheless, store much greater amounts of data.
The DVDs offer a versatility which is not found easily amongst other storage media. They can be of different categories. For example there is the DVD- ROM which can be used only for reading the data upon it.
Then there is the DVD-R which can be written upon once before it starts working like a DVD-ROM. The master of course is the DVD-RAM. The DVD-RAM can be written upon several times. This makes it more useful than the other DVDs.
Besides these we have the DVD-Audio along with the DVD-Video. These are, as suggested by their names used for audio and video purposes. Thus we can see that there is a wide array of the various forms of the DVDs.
The DVDs may not be as small and compact as the Flash Drives but they can hold much greater amounts of data as compared to any other storage media, barring the hard disk drives. Not only that, as we can easily fathom, they are more versatile than their peers.
Speed of Operation
The DVDs are not as fast as the Universal Serial Bus Flash Drives but they are reasonably good enough. They can easily perform the functions that they are meant to perform. Yet the biggest advantage continues to be the fact that they can hold such an enormous amount of data.
Reliability
Even on the reliability front the DVDs have a lot going for them. They are not spoilt by multiple usages. As they are read by the use of lasers, so they too, like the Flash Drives are not prone to mechanical wear and tear. They are not spoilt by the general handling and are not impacted upon by fingerprints etc. Yet they can be spoilt on account of scratches to their magnetic surface.
Design
The DVDs have a very simple circular design. It has a halo in the centre and the correct way to hold a DVD is by the sides or from the central halo. If they are subjected to contact with the other parts of the DVDs then they may develop scratches which can spoil them.
Both the DVDs and the USB Flash Drives have distinct features. Both have a place of their own in the media storage industry. Though the technology of the DVDs is much older and the Flash Drives seem to be the future, yet in all likelihood both are going to co exist for a long time to come.
