Hi, I have had excruciation pain in my right ear/head for almost 3 weeks now occuring out of the blue. Never had much pain or headaches before in my life. It started in my right ear three weeks ago and occured mostly at night when I would try to lye down and sleep. I would feel pressure and a shooting pain with almost a burning sensation in my inner ear.

At first I went to an urgent care one day after work when the pain started to get worse and aggrevated by talking. (I am a nurse an my job requires alot of talking). The doctor looked in both ears and stated that the right one was a little pink so he put me on Z-pack and sent me on my way. I took the antibiotics but felt no relieve. I then had a fellow nurse at work look in my right ear and she said that it looked fine and could not understand why the doctor said I had an ear infection. She saw my wisdom tooth halfway cutting through my gums and said that could be the problem.

Off I go to the dentist who says my problem is my wisdom teeth and I need to have all four out. I made the appointment to see the oral surgeon and came in that day to have my wisdom teeth out. The surgeon looked at my x-ray and said that he can not take them out in the office as the right lower wisdom tooth looks like it is cutting through my nerve. This would have to be done under general anesthsia and there will be a high risk of permenant nerve damage. He assumed that since my wisdom teeth have not grown in almost twenty years that its position in my mouth is not the problem but an infection. (for which there was no fever, swelling or redness in my mouth). He gave me Clymdamycin and Vicodin for pain and sent me home.

I took both antibiotics and pain killers. My pain got better for awhile then got worse. All the time while on Antibiotics. After a week of stopping these meds I went to work one day and the more I talked the more it hurt. Pain burning and shooting in my right ear. I went home took 2 left over Vicodin and went to bed at 11pm by 3:30 am I was woken out of a sleep on the verge of crying and screaming. Lying down made it only more severe so I got up and took 2 more vicodin until I got so sleepy I had to lye down.

I then consulted with my primary MD and her with a neurologist who diagosed my with TN and started my on Neurontin. The date of my MRI is pending.

I just want to know is there anyone out there that had TN primarily in the ear region that was worsened by talking and lying down? I can chew, brush my teeth and have people touch my face without any increase or initiation of pain. Does this reall sound like TN to all of you?

Sincerely,
Renee
